Chapter Eleven

Will felt as if he had one foot nailed to the floor and was going in circles. He needed to get the bathroom floor done, but there was the dumbwaiter to install and that gaping hole in the wall to repair. Plus, the new vintage-look stove was supposed to be delivered soon and he had to make space for it in the kitchen.

Catherine’s work on the wall had caused him a bigger setback in just a few hours than any he’d had the entire time he’d worked for Abigail. If she helped him much more, it might jeopardize the entire project.

Still, he needed a place to put the stove, so despite all the other jobs to be done, he headed for the kitchen.

Emma was knocking on the door when he reached the lower level.

“Hi, Emma, what can I do for you?”

“I found some lovely lace doilies Catherine’s great-grandmother made for my grandmother. I wanted to ask her if she’d like them.”

“She’s not here at the moment. She went to Becky’s.”

Emma cast him a knowing glance. “How is it going? You and Catherine, I mean?”

“Okay, I think. It’s hard to tell.”

“Just don’t give up on her too easily,” Emma told him enigmatically. “Sometimes she takes a while to come around.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Catherine and Abigail were two of a kind—strong willed, stubborn, compassionate, willful and kind. If you can handle Abigail, you can get along with Catherine just fine.”

Will stared at the older woman, half amused, half confused. “Emma, did Abigail say something to you about Catherine and me before she died?”

“Never mind, dear. Let’s just say you and her granddaughter came up a lot in conversation.” Then she smiled an old-lady smile and the wily expression on her features faded away. “Have her call me about the doilies.” Without another word, Emma walked out the door.
